Here is the secret about in-home newborn sessions: your house does not need to look like a magazine. It needs two things. Decent light and a warm room. That is genuinely the whole list.

I shoot newborn sessions in your home, where the baby actually lives, and the best ones always look like your life, just a little more golden. Here is how to get ready without stressing about it.

You Do Not Need to Deep Clean

Please do not spend the week before your session deep cleaning. Tidy the rooms we will probably shoot in, the primary bedroom, the nursery if you have one, and the living room. Shove the clutter into a closet. I mean that literally. I have never once judged a family's laundry pile, and I never will.

What I am looking for is clear surfaces near windows and a bed or couch without a mountain of stuff on it. Ten minutes of tidying per room is plenty.

Light Is Everything

Newborn sessions run on window light. Before I arrive, take a walk through your house around the time we are scheduled and notice which rooms are brightest. South and west facing windows are usually the winners.

Open the blinds. Pull back heavy curtains. If there is a room that gets beautiful light, tell me. That is probably where we will spend most of our time.

You do not need any special equipment. I bring everything the session needs.

Keep It Warm

Babies photograph best when they are warm and sleepy. Turn the heat up a few degrees before I get there, warmer than you would normally keep it. If the baby is comfortable enough to doze in just a wrap, we get those soft sleepy images everyone wants.

Have a couple of simple swaddles or blankets on hand in neutral tones. White, cream, soft gray, muted earth tones. They photograph beautifully and they keep the focus on the baby.

Feed the Baby Right Before

Try to time a feeding for just before the session starts. A full, sleepy baby is the dream client. Do not stress if the timing is off, though. Babies run the schedule, not us, and I build the session around that. If the baby needs to eat mid-session, the baby eats. We pause, we wait, we keep going.

Siblings and Pets

If there are older siblings, they are part of the story and I want them in the photos. Have a small snack ready for them. Toddlers do best when the session starts with them, before they lose interest, so we will get their images first and then let them go play.

Dogs and cats are family too. If your pet is part of the household, they can absolutely make an appearance. Just let me know ahead of time so I plan for it.

What the 45 Minutes Actually Look Like

My Newborn Essentials Session is $449 and runs about 45 minutes in your home. It is calm and unhurried. We start wherever the light is best, usually the bedroom or nursery, and work through a mix of the baby alone, the baby with each parent, and the whole family together.

Every image is edited and delivered to a proof gallery, and you keep 20 favorites. The whole thing is designed to feel easy, because you just had a baby and easy is what you need.

The Only Real Rule

Do not aim for perfect. Aim for true. The slightly messy nursery, the way your partner holds the baby without thinking, the dog asleep in the corner of the frame. That is the stuff you will care about in ten years.

Get the rooms warm, open the blinds, feed the baby. I will handle the rest.

Is it golden hour yet? Andrew,
