Your headshot is usually the first time someone meets you. Before the call, before the coffee, before they ever hear your voice, they have already decided something about you from a photo. That is a lot of pressure for one image, which is exactly why a branding session is not really about one image at all.

A branding session is a small library of photos that look like you on your best working day. The polished portrait for your about page, the relaxed one for Instagram, the one where you are actually doing the thing you do. Together they tell the story your words then get to fill in.

Here is how to walk into yours ready.

What Actually Happens at a Branding Session

We start by talking. Not posing, talking. I want to know what you do, who you are trying to reach, and where these photos will live. A therapist's website needs something different from a fitness coach's Instagram, and the session should be built around that.

Then we shoot. I will guide you the whole time, where to stand, what to do with your hands, when to laugh and when to just breathe. Most people tell me they are awkward in front of a camera. Most people are also wrong about that within about ten minutes. My whole approach is guided but natural. I direct, you be yourself, and the good stuff lands in between.

We will work through a few setups so you leave with variety: a clean portrait, something environmental that shows your world, and a few candid-feeling frames you can use everywhere.

What to Wear: Bring Three Versions of You

Plan on two to three looks.

First, the polished one. Whatever you would wear to meet your favorite client. For most people that is not a full suit. It is the outfit that makes you stand a little taller.

Second, the everyday working version. What you actually wear when you do your best work. This is the look that builds trust, because it is honest.

Third, the personality one, if you want it. The leather jacket, the bold color, the thing that makes you feel like you. Some of my favorite branding images come from this third look because the guard finally comes down.

Skip tiny busy patterns, they shimmer on camera. And unless it is your own logo, leave other brands' logos at home.

Where We Shoot

The best branding sessions happen somewhere that means something to your work. Your office, your studio, your home workspace, the kitchen table where you actually answer emails. Real environments photograph better than borrowed ones because you relax in them.

If your work does not have a natural home base, we will find one. I shoot all over Bergen County, and places like the Edgewater waterfront give you a clean, professional backdrop with the skyline doing the heavy lifting. We will pick the spot together based on what your brand needs to say.

What to Bring

Bring the tools of your trade. Laptop, camera, sketchbook, stethoscope, yoga mat, whatever your work looks like in real life. Props sound staged until you are holding the thing you hold every day, and then they just look like you.

Bring water and a snack. This sounds like a joke and it is not. Shoots run better when nobody is running on empty.

The One Mistake Almost Everyone Makes

Trying to look like someone else. You saw a competitor's photos, or a influencer's feed, and now you want that version. But people do not hire the generic polished version. They hire the specific human one.

The photos that book clients are the ones where you look like the person they are actually going to meet. Relaxed. Competent. Real. That is the whole job of the session, and it is my job to get you there.

Ready When You Are

If your current photos are a cropped wedding picture or a selfie from three phones ago, it is time. A branding session gives you months of content and a first impression you do not have to apologize for.

Reach out and tell me what you do. We will build the session around it.

Is it golden hour yet? Andrew,
