Fall Family Photos in Bergen County: When to Book, Where to Go, and What to Wear
Fall in Bergen County is beautiful and brutally short. The color peaks, the light goes golden, and then the leaves are gone. Every year the same thing happens: everyone wants the same three weekends in October, and the photographers who do this well book out first.
If fall family photos are on your list this year, here is everything worth knowing, from someone who shoots them every season.
When to Book Your Fall Session
Peak fall color in northern New Jersey usually lands in mid to late October. That window is narrow, and weekend slots go first.
The honest advice: book as soon as you are thinking about it. By the time the leaves actually turn, most established Bergen County family photographers are already full through November. If you are reading this in September, you are right on time. If you are reading this in mid-October, reach out anyway. Weekday evenings can be magical and they book slower than weekends.
Where to Take Fall Family Photos in Bergen County
You do not need to drive to the mountains. Some of the best fall color in New Jersey is right here.
Overpeck County Park in Leonia is my most requested fall location. The tree lines turn in layers, the paths give you variety without walking far, and the late afternoon light through the trees does half the work for you. It is also easy with small kids, which matters more than most people realize when picking a spot.
The Edgewater waterfront is my second go-to. You get the Hudson River, the skyline, and pockets of fall color along the path. It photographs completely differently from a park session, which is why some families come back year after year and alternate between the two.
Beyond those, towns like Ridgewood, Tenafly, and Fort Lee all have parks and neighborhoods that turn beautifully. If you have a spot that means something to your family, I am always up for shooting somewhere personal.
What to Wear for Fall Family Photos
The goal is coordinated, not matching. Pick two or three colors that work together and let everyone build from there.
Fall practically dresses you: rust, mustard, olive, cream, denim, and warm neutrals all photograph beautifully against autumn color. Texture helps more than pattern. A knit sweater, a denim jacket, or a scarf adds depth that reads well on camera.
Avoid neon, large logos, and everyone in the exact same white shirt. You want to look like your family on a really good day, not a catalog.
One practical note for parents of toddlers: bring a backup outfit for the little ones. Fall sessions involve leaves, and leaves involve sitting in leaves.
What a Fall Session Is Actually Like
My fall sessions run the same way as everything I shoot: guided but natural. I will tell you where to stand and what to do, then get out of the way and let your family be your family.
After the session, every image gets edited and delivered to a proof gallery. You keep your 10 favorites, and additional images are available if you want more. No awkward posing marathons, no stiff smiles. The best fall photos happen in the in-between moments, a kid throwing leaves, a parent laughing at it.
Do Not Wait on This
Fall mini sessions are the simplest way to get it done: a shorter session, a lower price point, and delivery in time for holiday cards. Spots are limited by daylight and by the calendar, and they go every year.
If you want fall family photos in Bergen County this year, now is the moment.
Is it golden hour yet? Andrew,
