Overpeck County Park is where I send Bergen County families when they ask for one spot that does everything. There is a lake, open fields, tree-lined paths, and in late October the whole place turns orange. It is also five minutes from half the towns I work in, which means nobody is driving an hour with a toddler in a car seat.
Last week I photographed a fall mini session there, and it is a good example of what a session at Overpeck actually looks like.
Why Overpeck works in the fall
The color peaks here in late October and early November, a little later than people expect for New Jersey. The trees around the lake go first, then the fields. Because the park is big, we are never fighting for the same backdrop as three other photographers. There is always a quiet corner with good light.
The other thing Overpeck has going for it: variety in a short walk. We can start on a path with trees over it, move to the open field, and finish by the water, all inside a 30 minute session. For kids, that movement is the whole game. Nobody has to stand still and smile for half an hour.
A real mini session, start to finish
Angela booked a fall mini for her family, and we met at Overpeck on an October afternoon about an hour before sunset. Minis are 30 minutes, so the plan matters. We started with the classic everyone-together shots while the kids were fresh, then let things loosen up.
That middle part is where the real photos live. The kids spun around until they were dizzy. Somebody cracked a joke I will not repeat, and the laugh that followed became everyone's favorite photo from the whole session. That is not luck, exactly. It is what happens when a session has room to breathe instead of running through a pose list.
We finished by the lake as the light dropped. Angela ended up loving the gallery so much she upgraded to the full set of photos, which is the best review a session can get.
Planning your own Overpeck session
A few things I tell every family booking here:
Book the late afternoon. The hour before sunset is when the park looks its best, with light coming low over the water. Midday sessions work, but golden hour is on another level.
Dress for the field. The grass can be damp in the fall, especially after rain. Boots or shoes you do not mind getting a little wet beat brand new white sneakers.
Let the kids be kids. The photos parents frame are almost never the posed ones. They are the spin, the laugh, the squeeze. My job is to be ready when those happen.
The details
Fall mini sessions are $179 for 30 minutes and include 10 edited photos, with the option to grab extras or the full gallery after. A full Essential family session is $399 for 45 minutes and 20 favorites, which gives us more time to wander the park.
Fall color does not wait, the peak window at Overpeck is usually just a couple of weeks. If you want photos like Angela's this year, see the fall session details here or get in touch and we will get you on the calendar.
Is it golden hour yet?
