Photographing toddlers is its own sport. They do not take direction, they have strong opinions, and their moods can change in thirty seconds. Here is what I tell every family with young kids before we shoot.

Lower your expectations and the photos will be better

Families who come in expecting a perfectly cooperative session almost always end up disappointed. Families who come in expecting some chaos, a few meltdowns, and a lot of running around tend to walk away with their favorite photos they have ever had. When you stop trying to control the session and start letting things unfold, the real moments happen.

Time it right

If your toddler has a predictable good window during the day, that is when we should shoot. After a nap is often ideal. Well-fed, rested, and not yet at the afternoon energy wall. Talk to me before we schedule and we will pick a time that sets everyone up for success.

Bring snacks

This is non-negotiable. Bring something your kid loves and save it for the second half of the session. A snack at the right moment can buy you ten more minutes of cooperation and some genuinely relaxed, happy photos.

Let them explore

Toddlers who are allowed to explore and move naturally are infinitely easier to photograph than toddlers who are being asked to stand next to their sibling and hold still. We will follow their lead. The goal is to capture them as they actually are.

Do not tell them to smile

Telling a kid to smile almost never produces a genuine smile. Real smiles come from real moments. Tickling, a silly game, a joke, something unexpected. That is what I am always working toward.

Toddler tantrums are survivable

If a meltdown happens, we take a break. Kids reset quickly when given space and comfort. Some of the best photos happen in the ten minutes after a meltdown when a kid is calm and cuddled up with a parent.
