I get calls from parents who just had their baby last week asking if I can shoot this weekend. And I always feel bad delivering the news: the window for newborn photos is smaller than most people realize, and the best photographers in Bergen County book out fast.

Here's what you need to know.

The Sweet Spot Is Days 5 to 14

Newborn photography works best in the first two weeks of life. Here's why: babies in this window are still in that curled-up, sleepy, poseable state. They sleep deeply. They're small in a way they won't be again. The shots you see on Instagram of tiny babies tucked into baskets? Those only work in this window.

After two weeks, they become more alert, harder to keep asleep, and less curled. The photos are still beautiful, but they're a different kind of session entirely.

Book in Your Second Trimester

I recommend booking your newborn session at around 20 weeks. That might feel early. It's not.

Here's the math: I typically shoot 6 to 8 newborn sessions a month. If 20 families in Bergen County are all due in September, and they all wait until the baby arrives to call me, most of them are going to miss the window.

When you book early, I hold the time around your due date. If baby comes early or late, we adjust. It costs you nothing to book ahead.

What Happens If You Miss the Window

Life happens. Babies come unexpectedly early. The first two weeks are a blur and nobody thought to schedule a photographer. I get it.

If you're past 14 days, we can still do a beautiful session. It just shifts from a posed newborn session to more of a lifestyle shoot: baby on the bed, in your arms, older siblings interacting. These photos are often some of the most emotional and real. They're just different.

Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. Call me anyway.

What to Prepare Before I Arrive

  • Keep the house warm. Newborns regulate temperature better at around 78 to 80 degrees. Yes, it'll feel hot to you.
  • Feed right before the session. A fed baby is a sleepy baby.
  • Expect 3 to 4 hours. Newborn sessions aren't fast. There's feeding breaks, settling time, and outfit changes. We never rush.
  • Have your props ready if you want them. I bring my own wraps and accessories, but if you have a special blanket or heirloom you want included, have it out.

One More Thing

These are the only photos you'll ever have of your baby at this exact size. They don't keep. Book the session.

Is it golden hour yet?Andrew
