What every Bergen County family should know before picture day...
Booking a family photo session is exciting, but it can also feel a little overwhelming. You have invested in capturing your family’s story and the last thing you want is stress creeping into the day. Over the years photographing families across Bergen County and beyond, I have noticed a few common mistakes that can take away from the experience. Here are the top five to avoid, and what to do instead.
1. Overthinking Outfits
Coordinating does not mean matching head to toe. Families often stress about everyone wearing the exact same color, but that can feel stiff in photos. Instead, pick a color palette of two or three tones and let each person’s style show within that range. Comfort always wins over perfect matching.
2. Skipping Snacks and Breaks
Especially with little kids, hunger and tiredness show up fast. I always recommend bringing quick, mess free snacks such as pretzels, fruit snacks, or crackers along with a water bottle. A quick pause for a snack can reset everyone’s mood and energy.
3. Setting Expectations Too High
The goal is not a magazine perfect family portrait where everyone smiles at the same time. The goal is capturing connection. Some of the best photos come when your toddler is running around or your baby is giggling at dad’s silly face. Loosen the expectations and you will love the results even more.
4. Rushing the Day
Packing too much in before or after your shoot is a recipe for stress. If your session is at Overpeck Park at 4pm, it helps not to plan a birthday party right before. Give yourself space to enjoy the shoot and it will make a difference in your photos.
5. Forgetting to Plan for the Weather
We live in New Jersey where weather changes by the hour. Families sometimes do not think about backup shoes for wet grass or a light sweater for cooler evenings. Having a simple backup plan keeps everyone comfortable and keeps the photos looking natural.
Final Thoughts
The best photos happen when families are relaxed and fully present. By avoiding these five mistakes, you set yourself up for an experience that feels just as good as it looks.
Is it golden hour yet?
